The Real Stat Math

This could lead you to ask, “Well, how did they come up with these values for Pokemon X, Y, or Z?”

Well, for the answer to that I give much thanks to the folks at Pokemon Go Gamepress for the article here: https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/pokemon-stat-change

For those that would prefer to read it here, I’ll lay it out.  We’re going to leave out IVs from here on and JUST look at how Niantic landed where they did on each Pokemon’s base stats.

Using Tyranitar as our continuing example,

  • Tyranitar (From Pokemon Go)
    • 251 Base Attack
    • 212 Base Defense
    • 200 Base Stamina

  • Tyranitar (From Pokemon Gen 2 Pokedex)
    • 134 Attack
    • 95 Sp. Atk
    • 110 Defense
    • 100 Sp. Def
    • 61 Speed
    • 100 HP

I’ve shuffled the order of the stats but that’s the breakdown for each game.  We’ll start with the easiest comparison first.

Base Stamina for any PoGo Pokemon is:

Base Stamina = 2 x HP

So Tyranititar goes:

Base Stamina = 2 x HP

200 Base Stamina = 2 x 100

Which as above we converted to PoGo HP Max of 169

The rest of it gets a little more involved.

To generate the Attack or Defense stat you need to use the following formula:

BaseStat = Round(Scaled Stat x SpeedMod)

Stat in this formula is interchangeable with Attack or Defense.  They use the same system.

SpeedMod is determined by taking the original Pokemon Speed stat and putting it here:
